Sanjay Raut, the UBT leader and Member of Parliament, has been granted bail after being sentenced to 15 days in jail for defamation. The case was brought against him by Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.
Judicial Magistrate Aarti Kulkarni imposed the sentence along with a fine of ₹25,000. Following the ruling, Raut's lawyer promptly filed for a suspension of the sentence to facilitate an appeal. The magistrate approved this application, suspending the sentence for 30 days.
Medha Somaiya's defamation case was filed under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code, accusing Raut of making defamatory remarks regarding her family. In her complaint, she alleged that Raut had made unfounded accusations against her and her husband, linking them to a ₹100 crore scam involving the construction of public toilets at the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation.
Furthermore, Somaiya contended that Raut disseminated these defamatory statements through the Shiv Sena mouthpiece 'Saamna' without proper verification. She is seeking an unconditional apology from Raut and has requested a restraining order to prevent him from making any further defamatory statements against her.
