Sangeeta Phogat Challenges WFI Election in P&H High Court

Sangeeta Phogat and two other wrestlers have approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court for setting aside the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) executive committee election conducted on December 21, 2023.

The petitioners argued that the election conducted on December 21, 2023, by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) was in contravention of the federation's constitution, the National Sports Development Code of India 2011, and a ruling issued by a Division Bench of the Delhi High Court.

In their petition presented before Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj's bench, the petitioners also requested directions to the Union of India to prevent the "suspended president of the suspended executive committee of the Wrestling Federation of India" from overseeing the day-to-day operations and administration of WFI.

The petitioners also sought instructions not to allow the suspended president from organizing any wrestling events, championships, or selection trials under the auspices of the Wrestling Federation of India's name during the period of suspension.

The petitioners further explained that they were compelled to seek relief from the High Court because the suspended executive committee of the Wrestling Federation of India was conducting parallel selection trials using the WFI letterhead on March 10 and 11. These trials were being organized concurrently with the selection trials arranged by the WFI ad-hoc committee for the same dates, intended for the upcoming Senior Asian Wrestling Championships and Asian OG Qualifier Wrestling Tournaments.

Upon considering the petition against the Union of India, the Indian Olympic Association, the Wrestling Federation of India, and another respondent, submitted through counsel Narender Singh, Justice Bhardwaj issued a notice of motion and notice regarding stay.
