Former Supreme Court judge Justice V. Ramasubramaniam has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
This appointment follows the retirement of Justice Arun Mishra from the position on June 1.
During the interim period, NHRC member Vijayabharathi Sayani served as the acting chairperson.
Background:
Justice Ramasubramaniam completed his law degree from Madras Law College and was enrolled as a member of the bar on February 16, 1983. He practiced for about 23 years before the Madras High Court.
On July 31, 2006, he was appointed as an additional judge of the Madras High Court, and he became a permanent judge on November 9, 2009.
At his own request, he was transferred to the High Court of Judicature in Hyderabad, effective April 27, 2016. Following the bifurcation of the two states, he continued as a judge of the Telangana High Court from January 1, 2019.
He then served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court from June 22, 2019, until his appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court on September 23, 2019.
He demitted office on June 29, 2023.
The NHRC functions in line with the Paris Principles, which were adopted at the first international workshop on national institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights held in Paris in October 1991. These principles were later endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 48/134 on December 20, 1993.
The NHRC stands as a symbol of India's commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights.
