Retired Allahabad High Court judge, Justice Umesh Kumar, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC). This appointment comes after a series of delays and controversies surrounding the selection process.

The AAP government had previously raised concerns about the delay in processing the name of Justice Rajeev Shrivastava, a retired judge from the Madras High Court, who was initially proposed for the position. However, President of India, Droupadi Murmu, took matters into her own hands and made the bold decision to appoint Justice Umesh Kumar as the new DERC Chairperson.

The President's appointment is in accordance with the powers conferred by Section 45D of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023. Justice Umesh Kumar began his legal journey by obtaining his law degree in 1980.
