The Rajasthan High Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to self-styled godman Asaram until March 31.
Asaram, who is currently serving a life sentence in a 2013 rape case, had previously been granted similar relief by the Supreme Court in another rape case just a week prior.
The Supreme Court's decision was based on Asaram's health concerns, acknowledging that he was suffering from several ailments and required medical treatment.
Following the Supreme Court's ruling on medical grounds, Asaram's legal team filed a suspension of sentence plea in the Rajasthan High Court.
A division bench comprising Justices Dinesh Mehta and Vineet Kumar Mathur granted the interim bail, noting that the plea presented in the high court was akin to the one in the Supreme Court.
Asaram's counsel, Nishant Bora, stated, "We argued that the plea was similar in nature to that filed in the Supreme Court and the grounds remain valid in this case as well."
Bora added that the conditions for the interim bail granted by the Rajasthan High Court were largely the same as those set by the Supreme Court on January 7, with only one minor difference.
"If Asaram wants to travel outside (Jodhpur), he will have to bear the expenses of the three constables who have been asked to accompany him," Bora said.
Asaram was sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court in April 2018 after being convicted of raping a minor at his ashram in Jodhpur in 2013.
