Rahul Gandhi convicted in 'Modi surname' remark case

Rahul Gandhi convicted in 'Modi surname' remark case

Today, the bench of Surat Court has convicted Congress Minister Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case related to the statement 'Why all thieves have the surname, Modi...'.

For the last 4 years, a defamation case was going on against him. Last week, the court reserved the verdict after hearing all the arguments in the matter. Rahul is present in the court at the time of the pronouncement of the verdict.

Rahul reached Surat from Delhi in the morning. 150 jawans have been deployed for his security. Security was tightened outside the court as well. According to City Congress, more than 200 workers will welcome Rahul Gandhi. It is mandatory for the office bearers of every ward to be present in it.

If there is a verdict against Rahul Gandhi, we will protest. If the verdict is in favour, crackers will burst.

Case Brief

Back in 2019, during Lok Sabha Election, Rahul had said in his speech that the surname of the thieves is Modi. Why do all thieves have the surname Modi, whether it is Lalit Modi or Nirav Modi or Narendra Modi? During the hearing of this case, Rahul Gandhi appeared before the court three times.

Surat West MLA Purnesh Modi filed a case against Rahul Gandhi. MLA submitted that Rahul Gandhi had called our society a thief. Allegations were levelled against us in the election meeting, which hurt our sentiments and that of society. That's why we brought this matter to the court. We will fight till the last breath. We have full faith in the judiciary.

However, Rahul Gandhi's counsel had argued that Purnesh Modi should not have been the complainant as an aggrieved party in the case, as most of Rahul Gandhi's speeches were targeted at the Prime Minister and not Purnesh Modi.
