During a recent occurrence in the district court, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Naveen Sharma was noted for diligently providing appropriate notice to the judge throughout the court proceedings.
ACP Sharma, accompanied by his team, appeared in court to present a suspect named Anil, who was accused of a ₹25 lakh fraud. Following the appearance, the judge was intrigued by Sharma's unconventional salute, which, using only two fingers – caught the judge's attention, prompting him to inquire from where he learned such a salute.
Sharma explained that he knew of three ways of saluting: simply raising the eyebrows, placing hands on the forehead, and the full formal salute. He realized the seriousness of the situation and blamed his tight shirt for his inappropriate salute.
The court quoted the Punjab Police Rules 1934 and reminded that every police officer in uniform is required to salute while entering the court, irrespective of the ongoing session of the court or the rank of the presiding judicial officer.
The background to the court appearance was a complaint filed in February 2023 by Praveen Kumar of Palam Vihar, alleging a fraudulent land deal of ₹25 lakh with Anil and another person, Sandeep, who had falsely claimed to work for the CM office. Despite payment, promised work was not completed, due to which, when Kumar asked for his money back, he was threatened.
Sandeep, identified as a constable in the Haryana Police, has also been implicated in the case, which is now under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
