Punjab and Tamil Nadu approaches SC challenging Governors' Bill Approval Delays

Recently, the Punjab and Tamil Nadu State governments, approaches to the Supreme Court. They are contesting the extended delays they've experienced in receiving assent from their respective Governors for bills that have been duly passed by their State assemblies.

In two distinct petitions, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have jointly approached the Supreme Court, seeking its intervention to ensure the prompt processing of bills that are currently awaiting approval from their Governors. These petitions were officially submitted on October 28.

The petition submitted by the Punjab government was cleared for listing, the status of the Tamil Nadu government's petition is not known.

The Punjab Governor, Banwarilal Purohit, has given his approval to just 22 out of the 27 bills that were passed by the Punjab Legislative Assembly while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was in power.

"Rest of the five bills passed by Assembly as well as three money bills sent by the Government recently are under my consideration and I will take a decision after due consideration on them in coming days," Purohit said.

Earlier, the Punjab government approaches the Supreme Court against Purohit citing his failure to summon the budget session of the house.

Conversely, the Tamil Nadu government has asserted that 12 bills passed by the State are currently awaiting approval in the office of Governor RN Ravi.

The Tamil Nadu government has gone further to claim that the Governor has been delaying the processing of files related to authorizing the prosecution of public servants and the premature release of certain prisoners.

"The Governor's inactions have caused a constitutional deadlock between the Constitutional Head of the State and the Elected Government of the State. That by not acting upon their Constitutional functions, the Hon'ble Governor is toying away with the Citizen's mandate," the plea states.
