PIL Urges Preservation of Historic Supreme Court Building

The petitioner filed a PIL in the Supreme Court, demanding that the Central Government and the apex court registry issue instructions to refrain from 'Demolishing' the Supreme Court building.

The petition asserts that the Supreme Court building holds significant historical importance as one of the key memorial buildings constructed after India's independence.

Petitioner KK Ramesh contends that instead of demolishing the Supreme Court building, it should be repurposed for other uses. Ramesh, in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), highlights that the current Supreme Court infrastructure comprises 17 courtrooms and two registrar courtrooms, yet the government plans to demolish the entire structure.

Consequently, an estimated Rs 800 crore would be expended to reconstruct 27 courtrooms, including four registrar courtrooms.

The petitioner highlights the escalating caseload in the Supreme Court due to rapid economic and societal growth. Simply creating 27 courtrooms and four registrar courtrooms within the next decade may not adequately address this issue.

Additionally, the petition raises concerns that the government has not unveiled the new design for the Supreme Court building nor engaged in discussions about it with the general public and the Bar Association.
