A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been submitted to the Bombay High Court requesting a ban on the online gambling platforms ‘Jungle Rummy’ and ‘Rummy Circle’.
The petition, filed by social worker Ganesh Ranu Nanaware from Solapur, urges the Maharashtra Government to take urgent action against these apps due to their detrimental effects on youth. Nanaware, who had previously petitioned high-level officials including the President of India and the Prime Minister’s Office without success, has turned to the courts for redress.
The PIL argues that these apps are highly addictive, leading to significant financial losses and even suicides. It claims the platforms violate several laws, including the Public Gambling Act of 1867, the Bombay Prevention of Gambling Act of 1887, and the Information Technology Act of 2000.
The petition also cites the Maharashtra government’s acknowledgment that no permits were issued for these gambling activities.
Additionally, the plea emphasizes the problematic role of celebrity endorsements in promoting these apps and criticizes Google India Pvt. Ltd. for continuing to host them despite legal notices. Nanaware is seeking a court order to ban the apps and suspend Google India’s server support for them.
