PIL in Calcutta HC Over Supply of 'Contaminated Saline' to Hospitals in State

A public interest litigation has been mentioned in the Calcutta High Court regarding the supply of 'contaminated saline' to hospitals in the state.

The case will be heard by a division bench consisting of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya.

The petitioners' counsel informed the court that on March 22, 2024, the Karnataka government had flagged a company for supplying contaminated saline, imposing a three-year ban on the company, while also notifying the West Bengal government.

The counsel further stated that despite the notification, the supply of contaminated saline persisted and was not discovered until a pregnant mother was administered the saline, resulting in severe consequences.

It was noted that while the state government had declared in January 2025 that the saline would no longer be used, it continued to be administered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The counsel, therefore, sought appropriate action against those responsible.
