A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been submitted to the Allahabad High Court, requesting a CBI investigation into the Hathras stampede incident.
The tragic event, orchestrated by self-styled godman Bhole Baba, also known as Narayan Saakar Hari, at Fulrai village in the Sikandrarau police station area of Hathras district, resulted in the loss of over 120 lives and left more than 25 people injured.
Advocate Gaurav Dwivedi, in the PIL plea, contends that the district authorities bear full responsibility for the tragic stampede due to their negligent actions. He argues that such lapses in law and order in the state could erode public trust in the government.
The PIL plea further asserts that despite the district authorities having mechanisms in place to prevent and manage unforeseen situations, and despite significant public funds being allocated by the state government for advanced administrative techniques, the tragic incident still occurred.
Furthermore, the petitioner has expressed deep concern for the safety of devotees planning to attend Mahakumbh, the world's largest religious gathering scheduled for 2025 in Prayagraj.
In light of these concerns, the petitioner has urged the High Court to consider his PIL plea via this Letter Petition and take suo motu cognizance of the incident. The PIL requests a CBI inquiry and the suspension of accountable officers for their negligence. Alternatively, it seeks an independent judicial inquiry into the matter. Additionally, the petitioner has called for compensation to be provided to the victims.
