PIL Filed Against Oath Ceremony of Justice Yashwant Varma

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Allahabad High Court's Lucknow bench, seeking a directive to prevent its Chief Justice from administering the oath to Justice Yashwant Varma.

The PIL, filed by Vikash Chaturvedi, cites an ongoing in-house inquiry ordered by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) into the discovery of "four to five semi-burnt sacks" of Indian currency notes at Justice Varma’s residence following a fire incident last month.

Justice Varma, who was recently transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court, remains under scrutiny amid the controversy surrounding the recovered cash.

Advocate Ashok Pandey, representing the petitioner, argued that since the CJI has reportedly directed the Allahabad High Court Chief Justice not to assign judicial work to Justice Varma during the inquiry, proceeding with the oath ceremony lacks justification.

The PIL also challenges the central government’s notification dated March 28, 2025, which approved the Supreme Court collegium’s recommendation to transfer Justice Varma. The case is expected to be heard on April 4, court sources said.
