Petition in Supreme Court urges swift enforcement of women's reservation law

A petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court, urging swift and time-sensitive enforcement of the Women's Reservation Act, 2023, which advocates for a 33 percent quota for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies during the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Advocate Yogamaya MG, the petitioner, emphasizes the urgency, stating that without prompt action, the envisioned advantages for women in politics may be forfeited. The law, officially titled Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, stipulates the reservation of one-third of seats in legislative bodies for women. However, its implementation awaits a new census and subsequent delimitation for seat allocation.

Yogamaya MG argues that any delay jeopardizes democratic principles. Despite the unanimous approval of the Women's Reservation Bill in 2023, concerns are raised about the lack of tangible progress or a clear roadmap for implementation. The petitioner emphasizes the necessity for the Supreme Court's intervention to ensure the expeditious realization of fair representation for women.

Congress leader Jaya Thakur has also filed a petition seeking immediate implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam before the 2024 general elections. It's important to note that the new law requires approval from a majority of state assemblies, and the 33 percent reservation for women excludes the Rajya Sabha and state legislative councils.
