Petition Filed in Delhi HC Against CAT 2024 Results for IIM Admissions

A petition has been submitted to the Delhi High Court challenging the results of the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2024, which is conducted for admission to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other business schools.

The matter was heard on December 24 by a bench led by Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav, who directed the Union Ministry of Education and the CAT convenor, IIM Calcutta, to file their responses. The case was briefly heard again today by a vacation bench comprising Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, where the Court observed that the replies have not yet been submitted.

Consequently, the case has been scheduled for further hearing on January 3, 2025.

The CAT 2024 exam was conducted on November 24, and a provisional answer key was released on December 3. An aspirant who took the exam has raised an objection to the provisional answer key, claiming that there was an error in one of the questions from the comprehension section of the exam. Despite this objection, the aspirant asserts that the final answer key was released without any changes to the provisional one.

The aspirant’s claim is supported by distinguished experts and faculty members from various CAT coaching centres. The plea also highlights that a total of 272 objections were raised by other candidates regarding the comprehension section. The aspirant further contends that IIM Calcutta hastily declared the results on December 19 without providing any justification or giving candidates sufficient time to pursue legal recourse for their grievances.

The aspirant argues that the results were initially expected in the second week of January 2025, and the premature declaration of results in December "raises concerns." Consequently, the aspirant has urged the Delhi High Court to set aside the results announced in December and appoint an expert committee to determine the correct answers.

The petition, filed through Advocate Praveen Kumar Singh of Lex Remedium, is scheduled for hearing by the vacation bench comprising Justices Tara Vitasta Ganju and Anish Dayal on January 3, 2025.
