Pediatrician files PIL urging Govt. crackdown on obscene content in social media

In response to mounting concerns over the proliferation of obscene content on social media platforms and its potential link to the surge in sexual offences, a pediatrician, Dr. Sanjay Kulshreshtha, has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court. The petition underscores the urgent need for governmental intervention to address this pressing issue.

Dr. Kulshreshtha's petition asserts that the unrestricted availability of explicit material through mobile internet not only normalizes inappropriate sexual behavior but also contributes to the alarming rise in sexual crimes, particularly those involving minors.

The ease with which such content can be accessed by individuals of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds is cited as a significant factor fueling this disturbing trend.

The PIL calls upon the central government to utilize its authority under the Information Technology (IT) Act to compel social media platforms to implement stringent measures aimed at preventing the dissemination of obscene content.

It emphasizes the collective responsibility of ministries such as Electronics and Information Technology, Home Affairs, and Women and Child Development in tackling this multifaceted issue.

Central to the petition's argument is the assertion that while there are various factors contributing to the increase in rape incidents involving children, the continuous availability of explicit material on mobile phones presents a significant and avoidable risk factor. Dr. Kulshreshtha points out the presence of numerous pages on social media platforms and messaging apps that offer such content, readily accessible to children of any age.

The petition underscores the need for immediate action to safeguard vulnerable individuals, particularly minors, from exposure to harmful content that can have detrimental effects on their mental and emotional well-being.
