P&H HC Takes Action on Waterlogging impeding Lawyer Attendance and Case Disposal

Recently, the Punjab & Haryana High Court took action, noticing that due to waterlogging near the court premises, lawyers couldn't attend, causing delays in swiftly resolving cases. They independently investigated the apparent negligence of the relevant authorities.

A Division Bench of Justice Sureshwar Thakur and Justice Sudeepti Sharma noted that, “no preventive steps yet became taken by the Administration, to ensure that such ill happenings are precluded to re-occur. Therefore, obviously prima-facie there is negligence on the part of the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh/, and, or the Administration concerned.”

The High Court's decision was prompted by the High Court Bar Association members informing the court about congestion in the parking area and the lanes leading up to it.

The court emphasized that the authorities' failure to upkeep a proper drainage system raised serious concerns about their efficiency. They emphasized the significance of the Punjab and Haryana High Court premises as a heritage site, holding immense relevance in the states of Punjab and Haryana, as well as the U.T. Chandigarh.

Case Title: Court on its own motion v. UT Chandigarh
