The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a directive for prompt action to confirm the safety of a woman reportedly trafficked by her live-in partner in Bahrain.
The single-headed bench of Justice Alok Jain has instructed the swift sharing of her location with the Indian Embassy to ensure her well-being. Additionally, he has directed the woman's parents and the relevant SHO to arrange a video call to gather comprehensive information on the matter.
Responding to the appeal from her parents, Justice Jain instructed that the relevant ministry be provided with the information within 15 days following the video call. This would allow the Embassy to take swift action based on the details provided. The decision followed remarks from the Union of India's counsel to the Bench, revealing that the woman in question had communicated with her parents via a video call. However, due to the lack of her address, the Embassy was unable to reach out and verify her well-being.
Justice Jain presided over a habeas corpus petition brought forth by the parents, prompted by a video call and messages from the detainee claiming she had been sold by her live-in partner in Bahrain and feared for her life.
In a prior hearing, the Bench instructed the Union of India to ensure swift attention from the Indian Embassy in Qatar regarding the matter, with a focus on the woman's safety. Additionally, the Bench directed the Union of India to facilitate a video call between the woman in Bahrain and her parents to ascertain the true state of affairs.
The directive was issued subsequent to an affidavit submitted by Phillaur Deputy Superintendent of Police Sarvanjit Singh. The affidavit outlined various points, including the woman's journey to Bahrain on March 9 accompanied by her partner, who followed her the next day.
