The Punjab and Haryana High Court has conferred the title of Senior Advocate upon Haryana's Advocate General (AG), Pravindra Singh Chauhan.
"In exercise of the powers conferred under Section 16(2) of the Advocates Act 1961, the High Court of Punjab and Haryana at Chandigarh has been pleased to designate Sh. Pravindra Singh Chauhan, Advocate (Enrolment No.P-2492/1999) as Senior Advocate with effect from the date of notification.
The aforesaid designation is subject to the condition that he would conduct 10 'Free Legal Aid' cases pro bono every year," the High Court said in a notification issued on February 18.
The move comes nearly two months after the Haryana government appointed Pravindra Singh Chauhan as Advocate General, succeeding Senior Advocate Baldev Raj Mahajan.
Chauhan earned his LLB from Campus Law Centre, North Campus, Delhi University, in 1999. Previously, he served as an Additional Advocate General for Haryana.
Notably, 210 advocates at the High Court applied for senior designation last year. While the process is yet to be concluded, the court had recently announced a schedule for interactions with applicants, which has now been postponed.
"The Court interaction of the applicants for designation as Senior Advocates, scheduled to be conducted from 24.02.2025 to 07.03.2025 as per Notice No.04/SPL.XXII.D.3(SAS) dated 19.02.2025, published on the official website of this High Court on 19.02.2025, is deferred till further orders," the Registrar Rules said in a notice on Friday.
