Today, the Punjab & Haryana High Court adopted a firm stance against the glorification of weapons in songs within Punjab, urging the government to furnish a list of such songs for necessary action to be undertaken.
Justice Harkesh Manuja orally asked, "How many FIRs have been filed against these songs...make a list of these songs and give it to me by evening, so that Union of India can be involved and needful can be done."
The Court further interrogated the state counsel regarding the measures taken against songs that glorify weapons. In response, the state counsel admitted a lack of authority to impose a ban on such content.
This development ensued subsequent to the Court's request for comprehensive affidavits from the Punjab Government, seeking details on songs either banned or proposed for prohibition due to their promotion of the glorification of weapons and violence.
The Court also expressed strong disapproval of the prevalent use of firearms during public events and the misuse of licensed guns for criminal activities in Punjab, remarking that despite the ban, "there is no visible change." In 2022, the Punjab Government had enforced a ban on the utilization and exhibition of firearms in public spaces and on social media platforms. As per the directive, officials were instructed to carry out unannounced inspections within their designated areas of authority.
Previously, the Court had instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to submit his own affidavit containing details regarding the guidelines for issuing arms licenses and the measures taken to enforce the State's directives. However, the Court noted that the State had not filed a comprehensive affidavit as required.
As a result, the judge directed the Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab to submit a comprehensive affidavit detailing various aspects of the actions taken to curb the glorification of weapons within the state.
