Nuh Violence | Congress MLA Maman Khan approaches Punjab and Haryana High Court

Yesterday, Congress MLA Maman Khan from Firozpur approaches the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking protection from “false implication and arrest” in the Nuh violence case. Six people, including two Home Guard personnel and an Imam, were killed in communal clashes in Haryana's Nuh and its surrounding areas after a mob attacked a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) procession on July 31.

Congress MLA Maman Khan, in his petition, has also requested for instructions to constitute a high-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the cases related to violence. The Congress MLA's lawyer Arshdeep Singh Cheema said he has also demanded that the cases related to the incidents of violence in Nuh, in which he was served notice by the police, be transferred to the SIT.

In his petition, Maman Khan requested that the Haryana Police be directed not to take any coercive action against the petitioner during the pendency of the investigation.

The petition states that several FIRs have been registered for incidents of violence and one such FIR was registered at a police station in Nuh on August 1. It said the petitioner was surprised by the notice he received on August 25 under Section 160 of the CrPC, asking him to appear in connection with an FIR.

In a notice issued to Maman Khan last month, the Nuh police had asked the MLA to appear at the Nagina police station to join the investigation into the violence, but he failed to appear on two occasions during the last fortnight.

Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij had recently said that before the July 31 incident, Khan was seen "on July 28, 29 and 30 in areas where violence took place." However, Maman Khan has said in his petition that he was at his residence in Gurugram from July 26 to August 1 and did not go to the places where the violence took place. He has also provided “evidence” in this regard in the petition.
