No Protests Allowed in Court Premises Amid AAP's Call for Action Over Kejriwal's Arrest : Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court issued a stern warning on Wednesday, cautioning against any protests taking place within the courts of the national capital. This comes in anticipation of the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) legal cell's planned protest concerning the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate. The court emphasized that any such protests would face serious consequences.

The division bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, raised concerns about the feasibility of conducting protests within court premises.

"Consequences are very severe for organising a protest in court," Justice Manmohan said after a lawyer made a mention of his complaint against the call given by the AAP legal cell.

The lawyer mentioned that he had sent a complaint via email regarding the protest call late at night and requested an expedited hearing of the issue. Although the Court indicated that it might consider the matter for hearing the following day, it also cautioned lawyers who were planning to protest within the court premises.

"There will be serious consequences. The law laid down by the Supreme Court will be applied. The court can’t be withheld. The court can’t be stopped," Justice Manmohan said.

The AAP legal cell has announced a protest scheduled for today, urging lawyers to assemble at all district courts around 12:30 PM to demonstrate against the arrest of Kejriwal.

In response, the Bar Council of India has appealed to the legal community to refrain from staging protests within the court premises. The Chairman of the BCI, Senior Advocate Manan Kumar Mishra, highlighted this stance in a press release, considering various media reports on the matter.

"I earnestly appeal to my esteemed colleagues in the legal fraternity of Delhi to resist the temptation of engaging in unwarranted agitation or succumbing to divisive politics. Let us uphold the integrity and dignity of our noble profession, refraining from any movement until a competent court unequivocally establishes Shri Arvind Kejriwal's innocence or declares his arrest unjust or unlawful."
