"Justice Mukta Gupta, a retiring judge of the Delhi High Court, recently emphasized during her farewell ceremony that judges are not performing acts of charity when granting relief to parties. She stated that her primary objective as a judge was to ensure that justice prevailed."
Justice Gupta reflected on her 14-year tenure as a judge, acknowledging that she may have made mistakes along the way. Nevertheless, she dedicated her life to the pursuit of justice, striving to ensure that the ultimate outcome of her decisions aligned with this goal.
During her farewell address, Justice Gupta shared a personal anecdote about how she entered the field of law due to incorrect markings in her medical entrance exams. She mentioned that despite achieving the top rank in the Delhi Higher Judicial Services Exams, she opted to pursue her practice. The then Lieutenant Governor offered her the position of Additional Standing Counsel (Criminal) for the Delhi government.
Recalling her time as a government counsel, Justice Gupta mentioned that she handled various types of cases. She accepted every challenge that came her way, leading to decisions in some of the most demanding matters.
Justice Gupta also highlighted her experience dealing with Intellectual Property (IP) matters. Initially doubted by others, she demonstrated confidence in her abilities and went on to author numerous judgments in the field of IP. She even co-authored India's first and only appellate post-trial judgment in patent law with Justice Nandrajog. In 2020, she became the first woman judge in India to be recognized among the top 50 in the world of IP matters.
In her message to young members of the legal profession, Justice Gupta emphasized the importance of self-belief. She encouraged them to have faith in themselves and to overcome obstacles with determination. Justice Gupta acknowledged that no profession is easy and that success must be earned through hard work and dedication.
Finally, Justice Gupta expressed her gratitude to her staff, as well as her former and current colleagues. Upon concluding her service, she confidently asserted that she had fulfilled her duties as a judge to the best of her ability, without fear or favor, and in accordance with the Constitution and the laws.
Justice Mukta Gupta was initially appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court on October 23, 2009, and later became a permanent judge on May 29, 2014. Prior to her appointment as a judge, she worked as a lawyer and handled notable criminal cases such as the Parliament and Red Fort shootout cases, the Jessica Lal murder case, and the Nitish Katara murder case.
