NIA Court Judge Orders Security for Judge Amid Threats Over Gyanvapi Mosque Survey

Recently, a Special Judge from the NIA court instructed the Registrar General of the Allahabad High Court to ensure the security of Additional District Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar.

This decision came in response to threats from Islamic fundamentalist groups following Judge Diwakar's order to conduct a survey of the Gyanvapi mosque. The directive underscores the critical necessity of safeguarding his safety amidst heightened concerns.

Judge Diwakar rose to prominence in 2022 when he issued an order to conduct a videographic survey of the Gyanvapi mosque premises. Special Judge Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi referenced an FIR filed by the UP ATS against Adnan Khan in his communication. The FIR, which invoked various sections of the IPC and the UAPA, accused Khan of threatening Judge Diwakar.

Adnan Khan allegedly operated an Instagram account through which he issued threats against Judge Diwakar, inciting violence. The FIR provided specific details of Khan's activities, noting a post that included a photograph of Judge Diwakar with a caption deemed inflammatory: "The Kafirs Blood Is Halal For You Those Who Fight Against Your Deen," accompanied by the word "Kafir" inscribed in red over Diwakar's eyes.

According to the FIR filed by the UP ATS Investigating Officer, the provocative Instagram post reached a broad audience, potentially inciting individuals sympathetic to Khan's ideology to target Judge Diwakar. The FIR underscored the post's capacity to inflame religious sentiments and provoke animosity between various groups, categorizing such actions as anti-national activities.

Judge Diwakar, stationed in Bareilly, communicated with the government secretary to highlight his apprehensions regarding inadequate security arrangements. In his correspondence, he detailed how Islamic fundamentalists were systematically indoctrinating followers to perceive him as an infidel and plotting his assassination. He urgently requested heightened security measures and immediate steps to safeguard his well-being.

In May 2022, while serving as a Civil Judge at the Varanasi Court, Diwakar made headlines for his decision to proceed with the survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque. His family expressed ongoing concerns about his safety amidst the controversy. Previously, in April 2022, responding to petitions filed by five Hindu women, Diwakar had ordered an inspection of the Gyanvapi Mosque premises. The petitions sought unrestricted access for a year to a Hindu shrine located behind the mosque's western wall in Varanasi.
