NIA Court Denies Rona Wilson Bail to Attend Niece's Wedding

NIA Court Denies Rona Wilson Bail to Attend Niece's Wedding

A special NIA court has rejected the request for interim bail from activist Rona Wilson, accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, to attend his niece's wedding. The court stated that the relationship is "quite distant" and his presence at the event is not deemed necessary.

Wilson was arrested in June 2018 after raids by Pune police at his Delhi residence, who initially investigated the case before it was transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He is currently in judicial custody and is being held at Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The activist recently requested interim bail from January 6 to 20, 2025, to attend the wedding of his niece (the daughter of his cousin sister). However, Special Judge Chakor Baviskar rejected his plea on December 13.

The court, in its order made available on Tuesday, acknowledged that the accused wished to attend the wedding ceremony of his niece.

"The relation is quite distant. His attendance at the marriage is not at all necessary," the special court observed while rejecting the plea.

Last week, the court granted interim bail to Sagar Gorkhe, another accused arrested four years ago in the case, to appear for his law degree exam. Wilson, along with 14 other activists and academicians, was booked in connection with alleged provocative speeches made at the Elgar Parishad conclave held in Pune on December 31, 2017.

The event triggered violence the following day at Koregaon Bhima, located on the outskirts of Pune. According to the Pune police, which initially investigated the case, the conclave was supported by Maoists. The NIA later took over the investigation.
