The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and other relevant authorities to address concerns regarding extensive mining activities in Uttarkhand's Bageshwar district.
These activities are alleged to have caused problems similar to those observed in Joshimath, such as cracks in residential and religious structures, as well as road damage.
The NGT's suo moto notice was prompted by a media report revealing ongoing mining operations despite numerous complaints and the absence of safety audits or geological assessments.
NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Afroz Ahmad highlighted the environmental implications of the issue. The Dehradun regional office of MoEF&CC, the Bageshwar district magistrate, the Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board, and the Central Pollution Control Board have been included as respondents.
The tribunal has instructed these parties to submit their affidavits at least one week before the next hearing scheduled for December 11. Respondents who submit replies directly are required to be virtually present to assist the tribunal.
