The State of Assam has been served a notice by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in response to allegations raised in a news report. The report suggests that forest officials in Barak Valley have purportedly violated mandatory procedures outlined in the Forest (Conservation) Act.
The alleged misconduct involves the unauthorized diversion of 44 hectares of protected forest land to establish the headquarters of the Commando Battalion.
A panel consisting of Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Dr. A Senthi Vel has concluded that the mentioned report has brought forth a significant concern related to adherence to environmental regulations.
According to the report, top forest officials of the Assam government stand accused of unlawfully redirecting 44 hectares of protected forest land for the establishment of a Commando Battalion headquarters in Barak Valley. The allegations further claim that these officials circumvented the obligatory procedures outlined in the Forest (Conservation) Act.
The report asserts that approval was purportedly given for the construction of the 2nd Assam Command Battalion Unit headquarters within the Inner Line of Reserved Forest in Hailakandi district.
Further, the report highlights that the Inner Line Reserved Forest, established in 1877, spans an extensive 1,10,000 hectares and is renowned for its diverse ecosystem. This area is home to endangered species such as the Hoolock Gibbon, Slow Loris, and Clouded Leopard. Furthermore, it plays a vital role as a habitat for elephants, tigers, and a diverse array of birdlife.
