New Criminal Laws Implemented: Things you need to Know!!
Today, New Criminal Laws were implemented. These are the things we all need to know.
- The new laws will enable individuals to file a zero FIR at any police station, irrespective of its jurisdiction. Further, these laws will allow for the online registration of police complaints and the electronic serving of summons.
- The new laws mandate videography of crime scenes for all heinous crimes. Summonses can be served electronically, expediting the legal process.
- According to the sources, these laws were amended to ensure speedier justice and to align with modern times and the new forms of crime that occur. Judgments must now be delivered within 45 days of trial completion, and charges must be framed within 60 days of the first hearing.
- Proper implementation of these laws will necessitate training and the establishment of forensic teams, whose visits are now mandatory for offenses carrying a sentence of seven years or more.
- New provisions have been introduced to address emerging crimes such as gang rapes, mob killings, and false promises of marriage. "This will increase the demand for forensic experts across the country, which the NFSU (National Forensic Science University) will cater to," said Mr. Shah.
- Mr. Shah added that the NFSU was developed in tandem with the framing of the new laws. Campuses of this university have been opened in nine states, with plans to expand to sixteen states.
- "These laws signify a watershed moment for our society because no law affects the day-to-day conduct of our society like the criminal law," Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has said.
