An interesting debate took place today during the hearing of petitions seeking recognition of same-sex marriages. The Chief Justice also mentioned his driver in the middle of the debate. Regarding the objections raised on the recognition of same-sex marriages, Justice DY Chandrachud said that the world is changing. Referring to his driver, he said, 'The pace of population growth is slowing down in countries like China. This is because people are not producing more children. Try talking to the people around you who work for you."
The Chief Justice said, 'If you talk to people, they will only talk about one child. My driver also has only one daughter. Now things like the desire for a son are also decreasing. People are getting educated now. After saying this, the Chief Justice pointed to the other judges of the bench and said that you know my driver. Not only this, when the question of raising children by gay parents was raised, the Chief Justice replied on that too. He said that when there is domestic violence between opposite sex couples then what to say on that?
He said that if a child's father comes in the evening drunk and attacks his mother. What will you say if someone asks for money to drink alcohol? He also termed the arguments being raised against gay marriages as trolls. Not only this, senior advocate Vishwanathan, who is defending the petitions demanding recognition of same-sex marriages, said that marriage is a union of two souls. He said that marriages are union of two souls. The only purpose of marriage is not to produce children. This is totally wrong.
The Chief Justice said during the hearing that we have come midway. Justice DY Chandrachud said homosexuality has been decriminalised. This has made it clear that same-sex couples can live together and be in a relationship. Now once we have crossed the bridge, the question arises whether we should consider allowing marriages. He said that it is up to us to redefine the existing definition of marriages. We have to think whether marriage means a relationship between a man and a woman.
