Mumbai Court Convicts Gangster Chhota Rajan in 2001 Murder of Hotelier Jaya Shetty

On Thursday, a Mumbai court found gangster Chhota Rajan guilty of the 2001 murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty. The sentencing is expected to be announced later in the day.

Special Judge AM Patil, presiding over cases under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), delivered the conviction.

According to the news agency, two shooters had shot dead Jaya Shetty. The manager & an employee of the hotel chased the shooters & caught one of them.

Chhota Rajan, whose real name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, is currently incarcerated in Delhi's Tihar Jail after being deported to India following his arrest in Indonesia in October 2015.

Last year, Rajan made headlines when he approached the Bombay High Court against filmmaker Hansal Mehta and the owners of Matchbox Shots LLP, who produced the web series 'Scoop'.

Rajan objected to the use of his picture and voice in the series, claiming it infringed on his rights since the filmmaker had not sought his permission. He learned about it from his wife, who saw the trailer. Rajan urged the court to permanently restrain the producers from releasing the series.

The Netflix series 'Scoop' is based on the story of journalist Jigna Vora, who was accused of the murder of fellow journalist Jyotirmoy Dey (J Dey). In 2018, Vora was acquitted, while Chhota Rajan received a life sentence.
