MoU signed between Supreme Court of India and Supreme Court of Singapore to enhance judicial cooperation

Chief Justice of India, Dr. DY Chandrachud, held a meeting with Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon of Singapore during his official visit to Singapore.

An important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been formally signed between the Supreme Court of India and the Supreme Court of Singapore, aimed at fostering cooperation in the realm of judiciary. This significant agreement was signed in the presence of both Chief Justices.

Earlier this year, Justice Sundaresh Menon had the opportunity to observe the proceedings of Court I of the Indian Supreme Court, presided over by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. This special occasion took place on February 4, 2023, when the Supreme Court of India was celebrating its Foundation Day for the first time.

Justice Sundaresh Menon was invited as the Chief Guest for the event and delivered a lecture titled 'Role of judiciary in a changing world.' During his address, he acknowledged the Supreme Court of India as one of the busiest courts globally and praised its justices for being some of the hardest-working judges. He attributed their diligence to the substantial caseload they manage, highlighting the significant workload that they carry.

This visit and lecture by Justice Sundaresh Menon underscored the importance of international judicial cooperation and the recognition of the Indian Supreme Court's role and dedication in addressing complex legal matters.

Justice Sundaresh Menon has held the position of the fourth Chief Justice of Singapore since 2012. Notably, he is the first Chief Justice of Singapore who is Singapore-born. He shares a common educational background with Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, as both of them pursued their Master of Laws degrees from Harvard Law School. This shared educational experience at Harvard Law School reflects their commitment to legal scholarship and excellence in their respective roles as Chief Justices.
