Mihir Shah, Main Accused in Mumbai BMW Hit-and-Run Case, Remanded to Police Custody Until July 16

Mihir Shah, the prime suspect in the Mumbai BMW hit-and-run case, has been remanded to police custody until July 16th. Shah, 24, son of suspended Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah, was apprehended on Tuesday evening following a 72-hour search.

Sources indicate that Shah has confessed to driving the luxury sedan involved in the Worli accident early Sunday morning, which tragically resulted in the death of 45-year-old Kaveri Nakhwa and injuries to her husband. However, Shah denies allegations of intoxication.

Police sought an extended custody period, citing Shah's attempts to tamper with evidence and evade capture by altering his appearance and communicating with family members and associates post-incident. Shah's actions included fleeing the scene via auto-rickshaw to his partner's residence in Goregaon and subsequently hiding in an apartment in Virar before his arrest. His mother and two sisters, alleged accomplices, have also been detained.

Authorities argue that Shah's custody is necessary to investigate his evasion tactics and uncover the roles of his family members. They also seek clarification on the ownership of the vehicle involved. Shah's legal team countered, pointing to existing evidence, including statements from Shah and his family driver, and CCTV footage.

The case has drawn comparisons to previous incidents involving fatal accidents and underage drinking violations at Mumbai establishments. The Vice-Global Tapas Bar, where Shah reportedly consumed alcohol, has been shut down for operating without a valid alcohol permit and serving an underage patron.

The victim, Kaveri Nakhwa, was tragically dragged for 1.5 km by the BMW after the collision, as captured by CCTV footage. Her husband, Pradip Nakhwa, expressed grief over the sudden loss of his wife.
