Meghalaya HC orders AAI and State collaboration for Umroi Airport runway expansion

The Meghalaya High Court has instructed the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the State to cooperate in determining the details for lengthening the runway at Umroi Airport. AAI has communicated to the relevant parties that they have made progress in conducting a feasibility study for extending the airport's runway. They have also provided a cost estimate for this important project to the State authorities. However, at present, the State has not responded to the proposal.

Extending the runway at Umroi Airport is expected to bring about a substantial transformation in regional air travel and connectivity. When this project is successfully completed, it will play a crucial role in increasing the airport's ability to handle larger aircraft, which, in turn, will promote the growth of both passenger and cargo traffic.

The division bench, consisting of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice B. Bhattacharjee, has directed that they hope the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the State will collaborate to work out the details and complete the necessary inspection within the next couple of months.

Both the AAI and the State have a vested interest in closely collaborating to work out the necessary details and expedite the inspection process. While the AAI has expressed optimism for a timely response and efficient coordination, the precise timeline for the project's progress depends on these crucial next steps.

The matter is set to be revisited by the authorities on February 2, 2024, which is approximately 10 weeks from the present date. All stakeholders are closely monitoring these developments, recognizing that the extension of Umroi Airport's runway has the potential to be a major milestone for the region's aviation infrastructure.
