Married at the age of 1, Annulled by Family Court in Rajasthan after 20 years

A family Court in Rajasthan annulled the marriage of a woman after 20 years who got married at the age of 1 (one). The woman had approached an NGO Saarthi Trust which challenged the marriage before the Family Court when the woman approached the NGO.

Rekha got married when she was 1 and her in-laws had been pressurizing her for "Gauna" a few years ago. (Gauna is a ritual in Child marriage when the marriage is consummated by husband and wife). She was pressurized by levying a fine of rupees 10 lakh at the community level if "Gauna" is not performed. She was pressurized by the in-laws when she was preparing to become an ANM, and then she did not want her dream to be shattered and she refused to accept the "Gauna.

Pradeep Kumar Modi, Judge, Family Court No.2, Jodhpur ordered the marriage to be annulled and ordered "Since a century, the evil of Child Marriage has not been eradicated. Now everyone should together take a pledge to eradicate Child Marriage".

The credit for the new beginning and good hope given to the victim and such other women goes to Dr. Kirti who is the Managing Trustee of the NGO. She is also a renowned activist who was included in the BBC 100 inspirational Woman. As per the reports, Dr. Kirti inspired the victim, Rekha of Child marriage, for becoming ANM. It is also learned that the verdict of liberty has come for the victim on the day of her 21st Birthday.

Salute to Dr. Kirti Bharti, Rehabilitation Psychologist and Managing Trustee of Saarthi Trust.
