Mahua Moitra challenges Lok Sabha expulsion in Supreme Court

Mahua Moitra challenges Lok Sabha expulsion in Supreme Court

In a recent update, Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra has taken her expulsion from the Lok Sabha to the Supreme Court and has filed a petition to challenge the decision.

On the 8th of December, the Lok Sabha passed a resolution to expel Moitra based on the recommendations made by an Ethics Committee. The committee had advised about her disqualification as a Member of Parliament (MP). This said action was taken in response to a complaint filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey, who alleged that Mahua had accepted cash in exchange for posing specific questions in the parliament session.

Moitra faced accusations of raising queries in parliament related to the Adani group of companies allegedly under the influence of a rival businessman, Darshan Hiranandani. Furthermore, it was also claimed that she shared her Lok Sabha log-in credentials with Hiranandani.

The Ethics Committee conducted an inquiry and found Moitra guilty, concluding that her actions warranted for "severe punishment." The committee recommended Moitra's expulsion from the 17th Lok Sabha, citing her conduct as highly objectionable, unethical, heinous, and criminal.

The Committee's statement read, "The Committee, therefore, recommends that Smt Mahua Moitra, MP may be expelled from the membership of the 17th Lok Sabha. In view of highly objectionable, unethical, heinous and criminal conduct of Smt. Mahua Moitra, the Committee recommends an intense, legal, institutional inquiry by the Government of India in a time-bound manner."

As the case unfolds, Moitra has turned to the Supreme Court to challenge the expulsion and seek legal redress.
