Madras HC says there cannot be any issue if private person erects statutes of Ambedkar and Periyar in TN

Justice Sathi Kumar Sukumar Kurup of Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) has virtually permitted a private person namely Kaladi to erect the statues of Dr. BR Ambedkar and Periyar EV Ramasamy observing that there would be hardly any objection in Tamil Nadu to a proposal to erect statutes of such personalities.

Hearing a petition the court said ".As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, there cannot be any objection from anyone for erecting the statues of Thanthai Periyar or Dr.Ambedkar. The people individually have respect for these leaders. In the light of the Rulings cited above, the prayer of the Petitioner is found acceptable. Hence, in the light of the Rulings cited above, this Petition is allowed, since there is no objection from anyone. The District Collector may pass appropriate orders based on the representation of the Petitioner on merits and in accordance with law within a period of two weeks from the date of this order."

The petitioner approached the Madras High Court saying that he had written to the concerned collector on 23.08.2022 seeking permission to erect the statutes on his own private plot in his village along with all the documents of the ownership of the land but the collector has not responded on the representation and a prayer was made to direct the collector to consider the representation.

Responding to the plea of the petitioner, the Advocate for the State of TN submitted that the Government of TN, Commissionerate of Revenue Administration had issued guidelines in 2019 for the installation of statutes and the same could be followed in the present case.
