Madras HC Denies Bail to YouTuber G Felix Gerald Over Controversial Interview with Savukku Shankar

The Madras High Court on Monday denied bail to YouTuber G Felix Gerald, who was apprehended by the Coimbatore cybercrime police. The arrest followed his interview with Savukku Shankar, during which Shankar made derogatory comments about female police officers.

Justice TV Thamilselvi rejected Gerald's bail petition, siding with the prosecution's argument that by interviewing Shankar and airing the interview, Gerald had given Shankar a platform to make the derogatory remarks.

The judge also reviewed the transcript of the interview, which had been submitted to the court by Additional Public Prosecutor R Muniyapparaj in accordance with previous directions.

"Why did you not edit out the derogatory portions? Shouldn’t journalists also conduct themselves with some dignity? Is it for personal gain and monetary considerations, he is conducting such interviews?” the Court said orally while rejecting Gerald’s bail petition.

Gerald was arrested by the Tamil Nadu police on May 11 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, following an interview in which Shankar allegedly made derogatory comments about women and female police personnel.
Following the interview, several complaints were filed against both Shankar and Gerald across the state. Shankar was arrested by the Coimbatore Police on May 4 and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
