The Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud delivered a poignant message at the centenary celebration of the High Court Bar Association of Nagpur, urging lawyers to prioritize the sanctity of the court and the Indian Constitution above their political inclinations and beliefs. His remarks come at a critical juncture when the legal fraternity's conduct and public statements are under scrutiny for their impact on the judiciary's independence and credibility.

The Chief Justice expressed deep concern over the recent trend of lawyers publicly commenting on pending cases and court verdicts. He underscored that lawyers, as officers of the court, bear a profound responsibility to uphold the truth and dignity of legal discourse. Chandrachud emphasized that while lawyers, like any individuals, may hold political ideologies and beliefs, their paramount loyalty should lie with the courts and the foundational principles of the Indian Constitution.

"In a vibrant and argumentative democracy like ours, most individuals have a political ideology or inclination. Lawyers are no exception. However, for members of the bar, one's highest loyalty must not lie with partisan interests but with the court and the Constitution," remarked CJI Chandrachud.

The Chief Justice emphasized the need for lawyers to distinguish themselves from laypersons in their reactions to court judgments. He highlighted that legal professionals, owing to their training and experience, play a pivotal role in shaping public perceptions of judicial decisions. Once a judgment is pronounced, it becomes public property, subject to scrutiny and critique.
