More than 250 lawyers have collectively signed a letter directed to Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam of the Calcutta High Court, expressing their strong disapproval on remarks made by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay towards West Bengal Advocate General Kishore Datta on January 25.
Last week, an incident occurred during Justice Gangopadhyay's proceedings on a case related to a caste certificate scam. This case had previously triggered a contentious disagreement between the single judge and a division bench presided over by Justice Soumen Sen.
In their letter advocates asserted that during a hearing Justice Gangopadhyay reportedly made multiple defamatory statements against Advocate General Kishore Datta. The lawyers further emphasized that Justice Gangopadhyay's comments were unwarranted and constituted a breach of decorum, asserting that he had exceeded acceptable boundaries by directing insults and insinuations towards the Advocate General.
"Whatever has fallen from the Hon'ble Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay on 25th January targeting the Learned Advocate General is unacceptable to the entire body of advocates practicing in the State of West Bengal," it was stated further.
