Lawyers end boycott at Bombay HC Aurangabad bench after assurances

Lawyers at the Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court have decided to end their boycott after Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya agreed to address their request for all judicial proceedings to occur within a single building.

The advocates had refrained from participating in court proceedings starting from October 4th.

On October 6, the High Court Bar Association in Aurangabad presented a resolution outlining their recommendations to address the challenges they encountered when attending court proceedings in two separate wings of the court building simultaneously.

The members of the bar had a meeting with Supreme Court Justice BR Gavai, who happened to be in Mumbai over the weekend. Justice Gavai encouraged the lawyers to resume attending judicial proceedings and assured them that he would discuss the matter with Chief Justice Upadhyaya to find a resolution.

Justice Gavai subsequently conveyed to the lawyers that Chief Justice Upadhyaya would be visiting the Aurangabad bench in the near future to address the matter. Additionally, it was communicated that the bench would facilitate hearings in the new wing through video conferencing, which would be beneficial for the lawyers.

In accordance with these developments, the Advocates' Bar Association at the Aurangabad bench has opted to end their non-participation in judicial proceedings and has resumed their appearances in courts starting from today.

The association has put forth the following suggestions for the consideration of the High Court administration:

  • One of their suggestions is the construction of a new skywalk exclusively for advocates, connecting the old and new buildings. This proposed skywalk would be located in close proximity to the existing one used by judges.

  • Alternatively, they have proposed the construction of a dedicated walkway exclusively for advocates, traversing through the buildings.

  • As an interim solution, the existing skywalk could be utilized by both advocates and judges, with the time slots for judges arranged according to their convenience.
