A special court in Kolkata granted the CBI permission on Friday to conduct a polygraph test on Sanjay Roy, the primary suspect in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Roy, arrested by Kolkata Police on August 10 after the victim’s body was discovered, has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
The initial investigation revealed multiple injuries on Roy, including on his left cheek, hand, and thigh. The CBI subsequently took him into custody under court orders and subjected him to extensive questioning and a psychological assessment.
The court also authorized polygraph tests for Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and four other doctors who were on duty during the incident. Ghosh has already faced over 88 hours of interrogation in connection with the case.
The brutal crime has sparked widespread outrage. On August 14, a massive protest by doctors turned violent, with around 7,000 people armed with sticks attacking RG Kar Hospital, causing significant damage to the emergency ward and raising concerns about staff safety.
The Supreme Court took suo moto cognizance of the August 9 incident, and Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud's bench criticized the handling of the case by Kolkata authorities during a hearing on August 20.
Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, who resigned from his role as principal on August 12, citing "moral responsibility," was swiftly appointed as the principal of another medical college in Kolkata. On August 23, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of a financial irregularities case against Ghosh to the CBI and rejected a plea from Ghosh and his wife to prevent media coverage of the case.
