Kejriwal's Aide Bibhav Kumar Moves HC for Bail in Swati Maliwal Assault Case

Bibhav Kumar, an aide of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, has approached the Delhi High Court seeking regular bail in connection with the Swati Maliwal assault case. The High Court is expected to schedule a hearing for this matter on Friday, June 14.

Earlier, on June 7, Kumar's bail plea was rejected by Delhi's Tis Hazari Court. This marks his second attempt at securing bail, following the dismissal of his initial plea on May 27 by the same Delhi court after thorough arguments from both sides.

Kumar was arrested on May 18 and subsequently placed in judicial custody from June 1 onwards.

The incident in question, dated May 13, gained attention when Swati Maliwal reportedly placed a PCR call from the Chief Minister's residence, alleging assault. Subsequently, she filed a police complaint a few days later, claiming that Bibhav Kumar had allegedly slapped her seven to eight times and physically assaulted her by kicking her on the chest, stomach, and pelvis area at the Delhi CM's residence. This occurred while she was there to meet Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was out on interim bail during the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

Following the registration of the case, Delhi Police seized the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) and other documents from the Chief Minister's residence, which were subsequently sent to the forensic laboratory for analysis. Additionally, Bibhav Kumar was taken to the drawing room of Arvind Kejriwal's residence, the alleged location of the assault on Swati Maliwal, to provide details about the sequence of events that transpired on the morning of May 13.

Simultaneously, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to probe the case. Headed by Anjitha Chepyala, who serves as the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for North Delhi, the SIT comprises three Inspector-rank officers, including an officer from the Civil Lines Police Station where the case was originally registered.
