Bollywood film director Karan Johar has filed a case in the Bombay High Court against the creators of the Hindi film "Shaadi ke Director Karan aur Johar," objecting to the use of his name in the movie's title.
The suit has been filed through DSK Legal against the producers of the movie, IndiaPride Advisory and Sanjay Singh, as well as the writer and director Bablu Singh (the defendants). Karan Johar is seeking a permanent injunction to prevent the defendants from using his name in the title of the film.
The suit was mentioned on Wednesday, requesting an urgent stay on the film's release. The movie is scheduled to be released on Friday, June 14. Single-judge Justice R.I. Chagla agreed to hear the plea on Thursday for urgent relief.
Johar claimed in the suit that he has no connection with the film or its makers, who are unlawfully using his name in the movie's title. He argued that the title directly references his name, thereby violating his personality rights, publicity rights, and privacy. Johar also asserted that the unauthorized use of his 'brand name' allows the makers to exploit his goodwill and reputation, which is not permissible by law.
Johar submitted that the film is scheduled for release in cinemas on June 14, and its trailer and posters have already been distributed in public areas and on social media.
"These trailers and posters have caused and are continuing to cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation of the Plaintiff. Further, such release of the said film with the title containing his brand name “Karan Johar” together or in parts, will cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation, which he has gained after investing huge amounts of time, effort and money," the suit said.
Johar was represented by partners Parag Khandhar and Chandrima Mitra, along with associates Pranita Saboo and Anaheeta Verma from DSK Legal.
