In a heartfelt speech at a felicitation event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Justice KV Viswanathan shared his thoughts on his recent appointment to the Supreme Court directly from the Bar. He expressed his astonishment at the realization that he is now a judge, admitting that it still hasn't fully sunk in. Justice Viswanathan thanked former Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice Rohinton Nariman for instilling confidence in him and believing that he would make a "reasonably good" judge.
Amid lighthearted banter, Justice Viswanathan mentioned that reading the gracious words of the Collegium resolution recommending his appointment brings him great joy, although it also serves as a reminder of his responsibilities. He acknowledged the overwhelming reception to his appointment and expressed gratitude to the SCBA for hosting the event, which provided him an opportunity to reconnect with the Bar.
Reflecting on his journey, Justice Viswanathan recalled an incident from his school days when he correctly answered a question about the Chief Justice of India, receiving applause. Little did he know then that he would be sworn in by Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, the current Chief Justice of India and son of the CJI at that time, Justice YV Chandrachud.
Justice Viswanathan emphasized the importance of senior members of the Bar supporting and encouraging junior counsel, regardless of their affiliation. He also pledged to uphold the reputation of the Supreme Court and fulfill his duties with utmost dedication.
The event served as a platform for Justice Viswanathan to express his gratitude and reflect on his new role, demonstrating his commitment to the judiciary and his determination to make a positive impact on the bench.
