Justice Indira Banarjee, Judge Supreme Court set to retire tomorrow

Justice Indira Banarjee, Supreme Court Judge is set to retire on 23.09.2022. After Justice Ruma Pal, Justice Indira Banarjee is the first woman judge who reached the level of Collegium of the Supreme Court. Justice Indira Banarjee hails from Wes Bangal and interestingly, Justice Ruma Pal also belongs t the same state.
 
Justice Indira Banarjee was born on 24th September, 1957 and passed her Indian School Certificate Examination from Loreto House, Calcutta. and then Graduated with History (Hons.) from Presidency College, then affiliated to Calcutta University. She did her LL.B from Calcutta University, College of Law, and Enrolled as an Advocate on 5th July 1985. Justice Banarjee Practiced both in the Original and Appellate Sides of the Calcutta High Court in all branches of law except Criminal law, with appearances in the Supreme Court, other Courts, and Tribunals.
 
Justice Indira Banarjee was elevated as a permanent Judge of Calcutta High Court on 05th February 2002 and remained Chairperson of the Calcutta High Court Services Committee for almost 4 years. She also officiated as Executive Chairperson of West Bengal State Legal Services Authority for almost a year, till her transfer as Judge of the Delhi High Court. Thereafter, She was nominated in July 2013 by the then Chief Justice of India for a week-long training in Judicial Administration at the Civil Services College, Singapore.
 
Justice Indira Banarjee was appointed Judge of the Delhi High Court on 8th August 2016 where she was also Chairperson of the Delhi State Legal Services Authority. She became Chief Justice of Madras High Court on 5th April 2017 and then elevated as Judge of Supreme Court on 7th August 2018.
 
Justice Indira Banarjee is considered to be a very calm, composed, and soft-spoken judge in the Supreme Court who always supports the Junior Advocates.
