Today, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. The oath of office was administered by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi during a ceremony at Raj Niwas in Civil Lines.
The event witnessed the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, senior government officials, sitting judges of the Delhi High Court, legal professionals, and other dignitaries.
Justice Upadhyaya's appointment was confirmed last week through a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice. He succeeds Justice Vibhu Bakhru, who had been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Upadhyaya’s transfer from his previous role as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court to the Delhi High Court.
The President of India, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, issued a notification confirming the transfer of Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, directing him to assume office as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.
Justice Upadhyaya, who graduated in law from Lucknow University in 1991, enrolled as an advocate on May 11, 1991, and specialized in civil and constitutional law at the Allahabad High Court.
He was appointed an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2011 and became a permanent judge in 2013. In July 2023, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, prior to his transfer to Delhi.
