Justice Arun Mishra Appointed Ombudsman for BCCI

Former Supreme Court judge Justice Arun Mishra has been appointed as the Ombudsman and Ethics Officer for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), as per details available on the BCCI website.

Justice Mishra brings a wealth of legal experience to the role. After retiring from the Supreme Court, he served as the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) until his retirement from the post last year.

His distinguished legal career began in 1978, when he enrolled as a lawyer. By 1998-99, he became the youngest chairperson of the Bar Council of India. In October 1999, he was appointed as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Justice Mishra later served as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court and the Calcutta High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court on July 7, 2014. He retired from the apex court on September 3, 2020.

Justice Mishra's tenure at the Supreme Court was not without controversy. He faced criticism for his role in the Judge Loya case, which was initially assigned to him, prompting a historic press conference by four senior-most Supreme Court judges expressing concerns over case allocation. Justice Mishra eventually recused himself from the matter.

Another contentious moment came in February 2020 when, at the International Judicial Conference, Justice Mishra praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as a "versatile genius who thinks globally and acts locally." This statement drew criticism from the Bar, sparking debates about judicial independence.

Despite these controversies, Justice Mishra’s extensive experience in the judiciary and legal profession underscores his suitability for his new roles within the BCCI.
