"Justice B. Veerappa, a retiring judge of the Karnataka High Court, expressed his views on the judiciary during his farewell function. He stated that the judiciary is the only temple in India that is revered by every citizen, regardless of their religion, caste, sex, or place of birth. Justice Veerappa highlighted that while the judiciary, legislature, and executive are all manned by human beings, the judiciary holds a distinct position and its function is divine."
The judge emphasized that the Indian judiciary is considered the last resort when all other options have failed. People approach the judiciary when they have exhausted all other avenues. He attributed this to the immense confidence that citizens have in the institution. Justice Veerappa stated that the judiciary has enjoyed significant public trust and is seen as the ultimate guardian of rights and liberties.
During his farewell speech, Justice Veerappa also addressed the issue of corruption. He urged members of the judiciary and legislature to tackle the menace of corruption, which he deemed more dangerous than the disease of cancer. He emphasized that corruption is a major obstacle to the country's growth and the well-being of future generations. The judge called upon judges and lawyers to set an example by eliminating corruption and ensuring the public's confidence in the judiciary.
Chief Justice PB Varale of the Karnataka High Court, speaking at the farewell event, mentioned the nickname "Tiger" associated with Justice Veerappa.
This nickname was a result of his fearlessness and straightforwardness in court. Chief Justice Varale also acknowledged Justice Veerappa's efforts as the Chairman of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, where he visited numerous government hospitals and prisons to gain a deeper understanding of the ground-level realities and facilities provided by the government.
