Jet Airways Founder Naresh Goyal Denied Bail in Money-Laundering Case

A special court in the locality rejected Naresh Goyal's plea for bail on health grounds in a money-laundering case during its session on Wednesday. The 74-year-old entrepreneur, who has been diagnosed with cancer, received the court's observation that he was receiving more comprehensive care at the hospital where he is presently undergoing treatment.

For the past two months, Goyal has been receiving treatment at the privately operated Sir H N Reliance Hospital in the area. Back in February, the court had refused interim bail to Goyal but permitted him to undergo treatment at a hospital of his preference.

The bail plea of Naresh Goyal was dismissed on Wednesday by the special judge designated for cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), M G Deshpande. As of now, the detailed order regarding this decision has not been released.

Naresh Goyal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in September 2023 over allegations of siphoning off loans amounting to Rs 538.62 crore, which were originally extended to his now defunct airline, Jet Airways, by Canara Bank, and subsequently laundering the proceeds. In his bail application, the businessman mentioned that following his admission to the hospital, he experienced fever and underwent cystoscopy, a medical procedure used to diagnose, monitor, and treat conditions affecting the bladder and urethra.

"Goyal has become very weak, immunity has become low and his health condition has become fragile after all his medical afflictions," the application said.

His medical condition presents a multitude of life-threatening ailments alongside severe mental health challenges, as asserted. However, the ED countered his plea, arguing that his medical records fail to indicate that Goyal's illness poses a threat to his life. This suggests that while the condition may be chronic, it can be curable with appropriate medical intervention.

The Central probe agency alleged that the current application was merely an effort to stall the trial proceedings, as the court had previously granted him permission to receive treatment at a hospital of his choosing.
