On Friday, HD Revanna, a leader of Janata Dal (Secular) and a member of the Karnataka legislative assembly, took the step of seeking anticipatory bail in a kidnapping case filed against him in a Bengaluru court.
In recent days, HD Revanna has found himself embroiled in a second criminal case, this time concerning allegations of sexual abuse involving his son and Hassan Lok Sabha member, Prajwal Revanna. Prajwal has been summoned by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) regarding these allegations.
According to a report from The Hindu, HD Revanna was implicated based on a complaint alleging the kidnapping of a victim linked to his son, Prajwal Revanna. The report states that the victim, who was employed as a house help at HD Revanna's residence, was allegedly abducted to prevent her from providing testimony against Prajwal Revanna. Citing police sources, the report highlighted these concerning details.
On the same day, HD Revanna filed a plea for pre-arrest bail in the new case, while also withdrawing his anticipatory bail plea in the sexual abuse case. This decision came after Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) BN Jagadeesha informed the Special Court that the rape charge under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code had not been invoked against him in the sexual abuse case.
As it was clarified that no non-bailable offenses had been invoked against him in the sexual abuse case, HD Revanna's counsel requested permission to withdraw the plea, with the option to file again if necessary. The Court granted permission for the withdrawal.
The sexual abuse allegations against Prajwal Revanna surfaced following the circulation of over 2,900 videos on social media, depicting the sexual assault of numerous women.
Amid the outrage, Revanna reportedly fled to Germany shortly after the April 26 polls in Karnataka. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer BK Singh, is currently investigating the case and has summoned Revanna for questioning.
In his first communication since the sexual assault allegations emerged, Prajwal Revanna took to the microblogging site X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, stating that he was "not in Bangalore" and requested additional time to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
